How to choose the right moving company and best time to move

Learn how to choose a reliable moving company that fits your budget, timeline, and needs.

Choosing the right company for your move

Online moving companies often rely on detailed forms, which don’t always give a clear picture of the actual volume being moved. This can result in understaffing on the day and unexpected additional charges.

While company costs will always vary, most moves are ultimately calculated based on the number of staff required to complete the job safely and efficiently.

  • Local “man and van” services are often the cheapest option, but they typically do not carry the appropriate insurance or have the experience and professional materials needed to deliver a smooth, stress-free move.

  • National companies often have high staff turnover, larger overheads, and can lack the personal service many customers value.

  • A reputable local removals company should have the experience, materials, and dedicated staff needed to carry out your move with care, while respecting your home, belongings, and their own professional reputation.

  • Some online companies work purely from itemised lists, which again may not reflect the true volume of your move. A reliable removals company should always want to visualise the job, either in person or via video survey, to ensure accurate planning.

At Dan’s Removals, we’re always happy to offer advice on other quotes you’ve received, even if we’re not able to carry out your move. Please feel free to pick up the phone and speak to us for honest guidance.

Choosing the best time to move

Certain factors, such as changes to stamp duty or wider market conditions, can create particularly busy periods. However, following the points below can help your move run more smoothly.

If possible, avoid moving on a Friday. Fridays are consistently the busiest day of the week, as many people prefer the weekend to settle in and unpack. While this is completely understandable, it does mean availability can be more limited.

Try to allow a reasonable gap between exchange and completion. Most exchanges take place around 7–10 days before completion. If you can allow two weeks or more, you’re far more likely to secure your preferred moving date.

Bank holiday weekends and school holidays are also particularly busy, so booking early during these periods is strongly recommended.
